You son of a& Lauren looked away from the amusement in his cool blue eyes.
Come, he said, rising from her bed and walking to the huge, walk-in closet. It s time to find you
something appropriate to wear tonight.
Chapter Nine
Lauren Wright was the most infuriating woman he had ever met. She was as weak as a kitten from the
Taint, which still lingered in her system, but she still insisted on fighting him at every opportunity. Before,
he had found her reluctance to be amusing, if somewhat exasperating. Now it was beginning to be more
than annoying.
Kris had a proprietary feeling towards her, which he knew was partially caused by the presence of his
plasma in her bloodstream. The anti-Taint serum had been made entirely from his own blood, spun down
to the pale, straw-colored liquid that could be safely injected into another s veins since AB type blood
plasma didn t contain the antibodies that caused reactions between different blood types.
Another part of the attraction was the fact that every time he fed from her, to draw the Taint from her
system, he was injecting his essence. The pale blue liquid secreted by his fangs was as unique to every
vampire of the Second Life as a fingerprint or a retinal pattern was to humans. It had exceptional
chemical properties, carrying both a vampire s strength and weaknesses within it, and it could cause
serious complications in his relationship with the human doctor if he wasn t careful.
Then there was the fact that he was marking her every time he fed marks visible only to another of the
Second Life. In all probability, Lauren didn t even see the marks of his fangs on her skin herself. The
healing factor in his essence made them nearly invisible to anyone but another vampire. But they were
there, branding her as his. Kris couldn t help feeling a sense of ownership when he saw them on the
underside of her forearm, even though he knew their Master/concubine arrangement was a pure fiction.
There was no doubt that Lauren would want nothing to do with such a relationship in reality, despite her
amusing fantasies. Jenica had certainly wanted nothing to do with it. Kris shook his head, why think of
such a thing now? Such memories were almost a century old and he had much more pressing concerns at
the moment. He turned his thoughts back to Lauren.
His own vampiric plasma swimming in her veins, the essence he had injected into her each time he fed

from her and drew more of the venom from her system, and the marks of his fangs on her body, visible to
other vampires if not to Lauren herself, all contributed to his feelings for her. But they couldn t completely
explain the strange emotions he was experiencing when he thought of the little human. Emotions he had
thought dead and buried in Russia a hundred years ago.
Now she was walking along behind him wearing an outfit he thought was quite becoming, though it had
angered her when he insisted on it. A deep green gown made of slithery satin hugged the generous curves
he was burning to explore, and fell to her ankles in a swirl of soft fabric. Up one thigh ran a high slit that
showed her lovely legs each time she took a step and the top was a low-cut v-neck with spaghetti straps
to hold it up. A pair of high-heeled green sandals completed the outfit.
He knew Lauren wasn t so much upset about his choice of outfit which suited her and brought out her
catlike green eyes. No, what upset her was Kris refusal to let her wear any underwear beneath the
slippery material. She had raged and protested until he had warned that if she didn t put the gown on
herself, he would put it on her and not be very careful where his hands wandered as he did so. That had
quieted her, and with a final angry look she had turned her back to him and slipped into the gown.
Kris spared a glance for her now, trotting obediently at his heels just as though she were a proper human
concubine. If he was quite honest with himself, he had to admit that he was rather glad she was not.
He had never hungered to have complete control of any human s mind as others of the Second Life did.
He scorned such a relationship as inferior, though he knew it didn t bother other vampires in the
least Simon being a prime example. Rather, he preferred a strong-willed woman with a mind of her
own. That way her surrender was that much more delicious when it was finally given.
Such a woman was all but impossible to find as all were so vulnerable to vampire mind tricks, which was
one reason Kris had never taken a concubine before. He had only been tempted to do so once, and that
had been many years ago.
Her immunity to his power was one reason Lauren Wright intrigued him, he supposed. Submission was
always sweeter after a struggle and the little human was nothing if not tenaciously stubborn about giving
up any part of herself to him.
She stumbled, causing a light flurry of echoes in the stone corridor and Kris was at her side, catching her
before she could hurt herself. He held her by her upper arms, careful not to make a bruise with his
superior strength. Humans were so delicate, so easily broken, he reminded himself.
Are you all right? he asked, feeling more anxious than he liked.
Fine, she said. He could see the inner conflict going on behind those cat-green eyes. She wanted to
struggle away from his grip but she knew they were probably being watched out here in the public
corridor. She also knew that she had no chance of getting free until he decided to let her go. Reluctantly
she remained still.
Remember to tell me if you feel ill in any way, Kris told her. He watched her carefully for signs of
Taint-induced fatigue. Despite everything he could do, there was still some venom in her system and he
wasn t very happy about bringing her out to Simon s banquet tonight. But their host could no longer be
put off and so Kris would simply have to keep a close eye on his human charge.
I ll be fine, she muttered, not meeting his gaze. These are higher heels than I m used to. That s all.
