"Of course."
I hurried out of the bank, pausing outside to light a
cigarette and check my phone.
12 Missed Calls
What? Damn it. I d forgotten to turn the volume back
up. I checked the calls and then my voicemail. Most of it
was my mother, but there were three new ones at the
end.
"Fynn, it s your dad. Jack s been shot, you need to go
to St. Mary s right now."
I dropped the cigarette, stamping it out as I ran to my
bike.
Shit. Shit. Shit!
The Hanged Man's Ghost - 58
Chapter Six: Let It Be
I called ahead to get Jack s status, stable, but I
wouldn t believe that until I was right next to him. I ran
through the doors and paused momentarily at the nurse s
station to flash my star. "Jack Winchester, where is he?"
"Room three-twenty." The young man said after a
quick look at his screen. "But I don t think he s
supposed to have visitors -- "
"I m family." I snapped, heading for the elevator.
The third floor lobby made it clear there was a cop in
residence. That much brass doesn t show up for nothing.
I saw the Captain, my dad, Jack s wife Cassie and&
"Uncle Fynn!" The precocious six-year-old launched
herself at me. "Daddy s hurt."
"I know." I peeled her off my legs and knelt down.
"But he s strong, he ll be okay. Don t cry."
Her cheeks were red, and her eyes from crying. She
clutched her favorite stuffed animal, a particularly
demonic looking cat, in one hand. "Promise?"
"I promise." I kissed her on the cheek and looked at
my dad. "How is he?"
"Stable."
"What happened?" I picked Tara up, and she wrapped
her arms around my neck, burying her face in my
shoulder. I rubbed her back gently.
"Convenience store robbery is what it looks like. Jack
pulled his weapon and identified himself, the perp fired,
and Jack was hit in the leg and cracked his head into a
glass freezer in the struggle. We got the guy in lock-up,"
Da said.
"Good."
"It s weird though," Captain O Bryan said. "This guy
has no criminal record, not even a parking ticket. He

even has a decent job. When we asked why he did it, he
couldn t even remember being there. It might just be a
con, but I don t know. I just have this feeling."
So did I.
"Why weren t you with him?" Cassie snapped. "You
should ve been there!" Cassie was still dressed from
work, a neat pant suit, her briefcase propped on a nearby
chair. Why he married a lawyer, I ll never understand.
Tara whimpered.
"I didn t know he was going to stop, he told me he
was going right back to the precinct& I was going to
meet him there."
"And why weren t you with him?" Da asked. "Where
were you, Fynn?"
I knew what they were all thinking. At least it wasn t
true. "I -- I was in confession." I met my dad s eyes. "I
was feeling out of it after the jumper thing, so I went to
confession."
"Bullshit," Cassie spat.
"I ll take a blood alcohol test right now, bitch," I
snapped back. Tara cried. "I m sorry honey." I bounced
her a little, "It s okay." Cassie turned away from me,
arms crossed over her chest. I handed Tara over to my
dad and moved past the group to the entrance to Jack s
room.
"He had some bleeding in his head," O Bryan said.
"He s stable, but he hasn t woken up since he passed out
in the ambulance."
I nodded. "Okay. I m going to sit with him."
"IA is going to be looking into this, Fynn. You sure
you were at confession?"
I met his eyes. "Sir, I may have slipped a few times,
but I have never had a drink on the job. I swear to God, I
was at confession."

He patted me on the shoulder. "All right."
I headed into the room, wincing at the IV stuck into
Jack s arm. I sat down next to the bed. "Sorry I wasn t
there, Jack. Can t believe you were boneheaded enough
to get involved in a robbery in progress without back-up
though. Pretty stupid."
The heart monitor kept a steady beat that I found both
annoying and soothing.
"Cassie s pissed at me, Tara s scared and& Jack, Rob
was planning on leaving me. I found his safety deposit
box today. The bastard wrote me a letter. A fucking
letter. His ring was in there, too.
"I probably won t want to tell you any of this once
you re awake." I looked through the door. Cassie was
holding Tara now, and my dad was talking to the
captain.
"I& there s something going on Jack. Something
weird. I can t explain it but -- I m seeing ghosts. And
that kid on the roof? I think he was possessed. If you
could hear me, you d probably think I was drunk but, I
haven t had a drink since the day Jessica died. I know,
big accomplishment."
I fiddled with my hands, suddenly wishing I had
something to knit. Something to occupy them.
"I don t know what I d do without you, Jack. You re
my partner and, even though you re straight, I m -- I
love you, Jack." I took his hand and squeezed it. "You
wake up soon, okay?"
My dad came into the room, standing next to me.
"He s going to be okay, Fynn."
"I know."
He looked down at my hand, still holding Jack s. "Is
that& Rob s ring?"
"Yeah. I found it in a safety deposit box I didn t even

know he had." I clenched my jaw. "There was a letter,
too."
"Oh, Fynn." Da shook his head. "I didn t want you to
find out this way."
Surprise, like a dunk in cold water. "You knew?" I let
go of Jack s hand and turned my attention to my father.
"You knew, and you didn t tell me?"
"What I was I supposed to do, Fynn? I was
suspicious...he d been acting strange, missing dates with
you, then that family dinner. I dug into it and found out
about the affair. I confronted him." Da shook his head.
"You were in so much pain when he died. What kind of
father would I be if I added to that pain?
"I didn t want you to suffer anymore than you already
were." He put a hand on my shoulder, his voice thick. "I
almost lost you when Rob died. I thought his betrayal
would be too much for you."
"Da." I wanted to manfully ignore my tears, but I
couldn t. I got up from the seat and hugged him. "He
was going to leave me."
"I know." He rubbed my back. "I know."
"Hey& " Jack croaked. "I m not dead."
I pulled away from my dad, wiping away tears. "Hey
partner, how you feeling?"
"Great. What happened?"
"You got shot." I sat down next to him. "Convenience
store robbery went bad, and you tried to stop the guy.
Took a nasty blow to the head, courtesy of a freezer, and
a bullet to the leg."
"I& the last thing I remember we were taking a call
for a jumper& " He shook his head. "What happened
after that?"
"We talked the guy down," I said after a moment. "I
wanted to stay for confession, you went ahead. I don t [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
